Title: Extracting solvation dynamics of aqueous transition metal and rare-earth halides using Terahertz absorption and IR spectroscopy
Abstract:
The fundamental details of molecular solvation dynamics of various aqueous transition metals and rare-earth halides is still a matter of discussion among various researchers. In continuation of the earlier investigations of nickel, manganese, and lanthanum; chlorides and bromides, investigated solutions contain aqueous zinc metal ions in combination with Cl- and Br- as counter anions using a combined terahertz (THz) narrow band p-Ge laser and broadband THz-FTIR spectroscopy. In theoretical perspective, experimental results are complemented by theoretical hydration modelling. Using these methods, low frequency vibrational modes attributed to various orders of ion complexion are observed. Present results strongly indicate that Terahertz absorption spectroscopy provides significant insights into the ion-hydration mechanism up to the molecular level as well as it has a strong potential to detect ion-complexation between cation and anions in aqueous phase.
