Title: Prevention and implementation of screening for colorectal cancer: have we achieved the targets?
Abstract:
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common malignancies, and represents a leading cause of cancer mortality.  In the past decades, we observe a rapidly rising incidence and mortality trend in both developed and developing countries. Its screening has been proven effective to reduce CRC-related deaths. International guidelines and Asia Pacific Consensus Statements recommended its screening starting at age 50 years, and the most common screening tests include faecal occult blood tests (FOBTs), flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy. Its uptake rate, however, remains suboptimal despite the evidence-based recommendation. To combat this global burden of disease, preventive measures in terms of health promotion and screening are necessary.  The objectives of this keynote speech is to provide an updated overview of the following: 1). Global epidemiology of colorectal cancer; 2). Recognised and emerging risk factors for CRC; 3). Biomarkers for detection of colorectal adenoma and advanced colorectal neoplasia, including the use of multi-target DNA, microRNA, methylation markers, metagenomics, and microbiota; 4). Effectiveness of screening tests for CRC; 5). A global overview of the performance indicators of organised CRC programme; and 6). Strategies to enhance CRC screening uptake and compliance. The lecture will also identify future research studies from a public health and clinical perspective.
