Title: Nano Bio Materials in Antimicrobial Therapy
Abstract:
The unique properties of silver nano particles (Ag NP) have been exploited within the fields of Photonics and Biotechnology over last decade due to their wide range of novel uses and applications. Nano-sized silver particles are well-known to be used in many bactericidal and antimicrobial applications1-4.
Silver ions being bioactive killed bacteria on infected wounds on living tissue and led physician to use wound dressing containing silver sulfadiazine and Ag NP to treat external infections.Wound dressing has shown as the most advanced technique to treat a lot of skin injuries due to thermal or physical damage. To accelerate the healing process, a wound dressing must meet a lot of requirements: providing moist environment, enhancing epidermal migration, allowing gas exchange, non-toxic and antibacterial. Among them, antimicrobial property is most important to prevent wound from microorganism for a long healing process. Therefore, a lot of disinfectant agents have been introduced to wound dressings. Among them, using Ag NPs is the most advanced technique as its high efficiency has been proven. Silver in the form of Ag NPs was demonstrated effectively against bacteria, fungi, viruses and even antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Currently, various methods have been applied for the preparation of Ag NPs, such as physical, chemical and biological. For chemical synthesis, nanoparticles were obtained by using chemical agents for the reduction of ionic silver into atomic silver; however, contamination can occur due to precursor toxic chemicals and the productions of hazardous by-products. In the case of bio synthesis, Ag NPs are prepared by adding silver nitrate solution to a microorganism supernatant, yet Ag NPs needed to be purified because bacteria could contaminate nanoparticles. For these reasons, Ag NPs must be used with safe and clean methods.

Polymer matrices have been frequently used as particle stabilizers in chemical synthesis of metal colloids since these prevent agglomeration of the particles. Among them, Poly vinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) attracts considerable attention because of its excellent chemical and physical properties making it a good material as a coating or as an additive to different materials. The high antibacterial activity with very low loading and the potential to obtain smaller size in addition to better distribution of silver particle are the essential properties of these nano composites.
